PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds

So what gives with this game, anyway? A lot of critic reviews I've seen have been hyping up this game pretty hard, but the Steam reviews are pretty bad at best. Someone wanna sum this up for me, or should I just not bother at all in general? I'll be honest: last thing I need at this point is another distraction, really.

So I don't actually play the game but I've watched hours of it because it's incredibly captivating. The concept is pure genius but from what I've seen and I'm sure the reviews are reflecting is that it's an incredibly janky and in many ways broken game.

PlayerUnkown is a fucking piece of shit.

I haven't played the game myself, only watched and heard about it - but what I've heard (and witnessed) is that the community is pretty terrible, the gameplay is laggy, glitchy, fuck-y, boring, or a combination of those many traits, and there's a massive element of luck involved. It seems like the only really good parts of the game are the interaction you can have with friends and the excitement of winning a huge match, the latter of which you can't get anywhere except... well, other battle royale type games.

Idea in the main game mode is you drop with 99 other people onto a huge island and try to kill each other, with randomly-generated loot on a pregenerated map (or one of two pregenerated maps, now that the game's been updated - I assume that you queue for one or the other). A huge field that does damage over time closes in every so often, restricting the area of the map that you can survive in and pushing players in towards one another to ensure that it... you know, ends. Matches take a long time (I believe around 45 minutes average?) and consist of a lot of dead time looting, running, or waiting.

I can't be bothered to buy it for $37 CAD, and it apparently won't go on sale because it was "just released" - meaning that after probably like, a year of being in development, it was put out around Christmas. Fuck no, I'm not gonna pay ducats like that for an underdeveloped indie game with two maps worth of replayability.

Basically what The Hound said. I own it, but I wouldn't buy it at its price, my brother bought it. The gameplay is pretty unique, a debatable point with the rise of Fornite and whatever that h1z1 game is, but regardless it's the more intense, realistic slow burn of the two. The game is great if you have friends, really fuckin boring if you play solo. Well, my first two hours solo was actually kind of magical and intense, but after that I just was really bored.

If the gameplay doesn't grip you, and you don't have friends to play with, it's a janky incomplete game. If you've got mates it's basically a "Can you believe what just happened holy fuck" simulator. In the few games I have played with friends I've had some crazy hilarious moments, including a triple kill while skirting around on a motorbike while be shot from all sides. Was really fun.

So yeah, it's not for everyone, and is basically a party game, not a solo purchase. I don't like it and it should objectively be cheaper for what it offers but I see the appeal.

It's like the hunger games, but more buggy than a Bethesda game. Fun with friends or when not taken seriously. Matches only take a long time if your good, but if you get eliminated early you can instantly start another instead of waiting for a winner. All the random spawns keep things from getting stale fast.

I only play occasionally, but when I do it's usually just to mess around with some friends.

I dunno about that, man. The Steam reviews are < 60% positive, and from what everybody's been saying here that's pretty much par for the course. I'd sooner we went back to playing Guns of Icarus again.

I have 41 hours played, which isn't a lot compared to many people who enjoy the game, but I'd say what you see is what you get. If you watch a stream and like the gameplay, you'll probably enjoy playing it. It's definitely janky but the new 1.0 update that dropped on December 20th has added a lot of much-needed polish. It still has bugs though. In my opinion, the enjoyment from game play outweighs the bugs. Unfortunately, it's probably not going on sale any time soon since it just hit 3 million concurrent players and with no end in sight. For me, the price tag was worth it. Besides the hype, watching streams of people playing made me want to buy it and play it even more and I wasn't disappointed. I'd recommend playing with friends, but that's a tip for basically any multiplayer game.

me with EUIV vanilla.

I know you and @Firedemon love it but fuck I will never forget or forgive paying full price for vanilla EU IV.

Yeah i'm with 13th. I'm actually still subscribed to the PUBG subreddit because like I said, the game is a "holy shit" simulator. I think the steam reviews are biased towards the negatives due to some fair criticisms on price, the slow development/patch time and the usual Early Access shenanigans.

The reality of the game is that it's mostly Love it or Hate it, but playing with friends might flip you between one of the two. I had some great times in it, and if I had 41 hours of the bullshit me and my mate pulled off instead of the 1 hour we actually experienced I'd be a happy customer. It's a game that deserves criticism, but not the hate i've been seeing online of late.

It's on sale pretty regularly, though. Same for the expansions, except whatever the newest one is at the time because that's how Paradox gets ya.

Man I paid $50 for a game.that wasn't even finished then they sell ya art of war for $20 USD paradox can get fucked and fuck the Reddit community that sucks up to them like they're the best company in the world.

Sale doesn't change the base price and the fact the steam refunds didn't exist when I bought it or the fact that steam broke Australian consumer laws by not offering steam refunds at the time.

Also doesn't change the fucking mana system lmao that's straight up terrible and I love the hearts of iron 4 features political mana.

Stellaris is the only good game they've made recently and it's good because I bought it for $15 because their games are cheap to make they just have a monopoly on the grand strategy genre. I'll continue to play Victoria 2 and laugh at the fact that the creator of the Victoria 2 economy left paradox and they don't know how it fuckin works.

Fuck paradox.

I do miss riding Wilger's Mother.
Good times... wait, didn't I record some of that somewhere? Man, I hope I did.

Edit: Damn. But I did get a solid bunch of laughs out of the thread.
We can't just be riding Wilger's Mother all the time, though, and definitely not on every map. Some of them are way too chock-full of looming obstacles and all kinds of tight corners and narrow passageways that Wilger's Mother has a really hard time squeezing into. Granted, some of that is because I'm still getting used to Galleon; while a Pyramidion like Flying Shark Island has both the helm and the guns at the front of the ship, with Wilger's Mother I have to be constantly paying attention to either side while also driving from the rear, so I end up having to go a lot more slowly as a consequence. Sure, I could just pop a whole bunch of moonshine to go faster if I really need to, but you gotta consider that poor engineer who's going to have to clean it all up afterwards.

I think Fortnite's free battle royale mode is on PC as well, right? Correct me if I'm wrong. That said, if it is, try that out first and see how you like it. Free and all that. It's very similar to PUBG from what I've seen, but even if it's got a sort of cartoonish/overwatch style vibe to its art scheme, it plays like a less complicated PUBG, but still does the same thing.

And it's got jump pads and weird af building mechanics, letting you launch yourself over the sniper nest your enemy built in the eye of the storm and absolutely wrecking their shit. PUBG don't got dat.

But yeah, Fortnite's free BR mode is a cool jumping off point.

Paradox legit got badly assblasted last year (by the Paradox forums crowd, not the shit-tier Reddit community) for raising prices in most countries other than the USA, and offered a pretty substantial apology (which I think I posted about somewhere). Aside from putting the prices back to normal, anyone who bought a Paradox product when they were higher got their choice of either one free game (Stellaris, HoI4, Tyranny, EUIV, etc.) or two free DLCs.

I bought Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword on sale for $1.50, and got a free copy of Tyranny out of it. And if you're gonna tell me that's not value, you can get the fuck outta here.

Fuck you; paper, bird, and sword mana are pimp. And you should certainly wait for an old-ass title to go on sale instead of buying full price, that's just... Common Sense.

Fuck paradox.
Never got into Vicky. Paradox has ups and downs, but the constant need to release a fuckload of DLC for everything is definitely a down. Then again, some of it really does have massive improvements to game quality, whether in the level of detail or in the mechanics added (Common Sense, for example, is fucking great - though on the other hand, you get pretty badly shit on without it).

That said, I'm not rich, so I've recently taken to getting my hands on EU4 DLC through less savory methods. I'll pay for new games and even some DLC, but fuck all of it.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, not to be confused with @Artist "The New Jesus" Unknown, is a game that I will not lie is fun. However, it's also a game with glaring faults that are integral to the game that will cause the game to be frustrating and ruin the fun for a lot of players and a lot of play-throughs. No matter where you land, it's up to luck whether you find good "gear". I've dropped in "hot" locations and gotten nothing but defensive gear like vests and helmets and I've dropped in crappy locations that most players look over and found excellent gear.

However, as long as you manage to find a gun and you play smart, you can actually make it pretty far. I've played rounds with friends (the only way I'd recommend to play) and we've made it to final three when I went the through the beginning without a weapon and only minutes before the final few circles did I find a rare M4, just to end up dropping it for a less rare AKM because it didn't spawn with ammo.

Another thing to consider is that the game currently only has two maps, although a third is in the works with a snow theme. The Russian map called Erangel is the iconic one of the two and is better than it's younger brother Miramar. Miramar lacks enough loot locations and features too much empty space that'll leave you prone to being spotted and shot from vast distances away. What is cool but also bugs me is that each map features unique weapons and vehicles. All this being said, gameplay can get stale pretty quickly and I find myself tossing grenades at my friends and seeing how close I can miss them with my guns. Maybe in the future when there are more maps in rotation it could keep my attention and warrant its price tag but now things are predictable and I find myself limiting my play time a lot because of it.

Since 1.0, I personally haven't encountered many severe bugs, however in a game where every second counts any bug pretty much becomes game breaking as it can easily get you killed. Playing through it's beta, there were a lot of strange things but I think the game now is considerably polished. Parachutes still need help and the killcam feature is only good to show where you got shot from as the replay isn't accurate enough to show how your killer actually shot you as they always end up shooting behind you in some laggy looking inaccurate recreation.

However, even though I love FPS games I find that PUBG is just an O.K game.

It boils down to what everybody else has figured: it's gotta be your type of game in order to enjoy it and if it is, it'll still be frustrating at times. If your friends got it and you can pick it up on sale, do it.

I bought it on release. CK2 was an amazing game on release, I assumed EU4 would be as well. The price changing story doesn't give me any kudos to them because their games are already overpriced so reverting back to that price point leaves you in the same situation you started in.

Yeah I own a solid amount of CK2 DLC and yet if I feel like playing it I launch my pirated version.

Hold dafuq on. EUIV was really solid on release. Better than EUIII in pretty much every way, and EUIII was toppest in genre by a mile in its own time.
