Wilhelm considers it for a moment and asks perplexedly, "You're asking me? I guess Regis's idea makes sense to me. I figure that we would find the wolves that actually did the people-eating if we followed the tracks from there? Plus, we might be able to gain additional insight into the nature of the wolf problem." Having decided what he thought was best at least, Wilhelm hefts his ax and starts walking down the well-worn patrol path.

The jovial crowd quiets as Ser Gabriel gives his short speech. Cheers and applause follow it. Knightlord Strauss raises a glass to Ser Gabriel. "Aye, Ser Gabriel. Ser Salah is around here somewhere. Neustarr's favor on the task ahead of you both." Several of the knights raise their glasses as well and pass on their own blessings.

Hushed whispers about what might be happening that requires the attention of the Phoenix.
"I bet they're going to take on that assassin's guild. I heard they drugged Lady Arieana and pushed her off a bridge."
"I heard she was with child. What kind of monster kills a woman with child?"
"I heard the babe wasn't Lord Gnass's. I bet he ordered the hit."

"I'll take the lead and keep an eye on signs of these beasts." As Camphor enters the woodland, his image blurs and he begins blending into the foliage. "I'll blow this signal whistle if I find anything. You guys stick to the trail."

"Bah, elven tricks. All you'll find is me cleaving those beasts in twain with Vera here." Regas unslings his hefty axe and runs a finger along the blade. He pulls a whetstone from his pack and runs it along the blade. "Just stick close to me, Cookie. I'll make sure no harm comes to ye."

The trio of pseudo-hunters travel down the patrol path. After some time, Regas and Wilhelm come across a bloody leg chewed to the bone in the path. A opossum snarls as the pair approach. Regas kneels over dismembered limb. "Definitely from the patrol. It's picked fairly clean, but the blood is fairly fresh. Wolves might still be nearby." He stands and points to the left of the path. "Keep your eyes and ears open for any signs of movement in the underbrush. We don't want them to get the jump on us, or we'll end up like this guy." Regas gives the leg a swift kick.

Camphor's whistle blows from some distance to the right of the path. Regas nods to Wilhelm and shoves a thumb toward the direction of the sound. "That'll be our elf. He musta found sumthin'.

Wilhelm's heart jumps, anxiety setting it throbbing manically in his chest. His eyes scan the brush. Was that movement? With a faint quaver in his voice, he asks "Do...do you think he's ok out there?" More firmly, the human adds, "We should definitely go check on him." He sets a hand on Regis's shoulder, and moves to follow him into the brush.

Valgen gave a nod, taking the satchel and wine skin before she disappeared into the crowd of patrons. Taking a swig from the wine skin, he listened the dwarves.

"Aye, lads. I 'noo of Mordrin's attitude. Dun worry, I'll be tharr soon." Valgen looked at Borra - the taller blonde dwarf compared to the red-knotted superior of his. "I'll make 'me way there now. And Borra, dun worry. I won't be lookin' out for any trolls. They'll be too busy lookin' out for me. "

A toothy grin spread across Valgen's face as he nodded at the two and walked past them. He took the bun out of his satchel, chomping down a bite before putting it back in. He looked around before making his way to the rendezvous for the escort.

Pleasantly surprised by the honeyed words of the speech, Salah - like most in attendance - raised his glass to the toast at its conclusion before drinking deeply of the wine within. The less inviting message (more accurately, command) which followed the applause was much more in line with what he had expected. Though it pained the young knight to take leave of the feast so quickly and abruptly, the words of his father reminded him of his duty: Justice cannot rest, lest good men suffer and wickedness triumph. Taking only a final mouthful of roast meat and a last gulp of wine (which, thankfully, provided time enough to catch Ser Gabriel's name from Knightlord Strauss), Salah stood and quietly excused himself, following Ser Gabriel to the stableyards and greeting what would, presumably, be his new teacher and comrade with a bright smile and nod of deference. "Ser Salah Saralis, at your command. What do you require of me, Ser Gabriel?"

Kappa jumped back in surprise when he saw the beautiful woman before him. “A-ah, um, I'msosorry!” He apologized, bowing his head, “I didn't mean to intrude on your home.” In his mind he cursed at himself for stuttering. Kappa could never quite get over his nervousness around the taller folk. Thinking back he knew he shouldn't have stayed so long by the water, sleepiness always strikes when you least expect it. He looked back up at the woman, when he looked at her he felt like he could stay here forever. As soon as he realized he was blushing his eyes broke contact. He couldn't stay here, he needed to figure out how to engineer cloaking technology and file a patent. He hated filing patents, but it needed to be done.

“Well, I was travelling to a lumberyard by the Haunted Wood, and I stopped here for a rest. I didn't mean to fall asleep or anything. Speaking of which, I should get going, I don't want to bother you.”

Ser Gabriel had ignored the remarks and speculation in the hall, pausing only to acknowledge the Knightlord's encouragement, and was already saddling his horse when Salah found him. He was not so brisk with his new comrade-in-arms, however, and returned a nod that was friendly enough despite the lack of smile that came with it.

"Ah, so you've heard of me," he said, offering his hand to shake briefly before returning to the straps of the saddle. "Very well. Congratulations, Ser Salah. You've already received your first assignment." The last saddlebag was tied on firmly and, satisfied, he took the white stallion's reins in one hand, and dug into a shirt pocket with the other.

"Order came in just minutes ago," he said, handing Salah the piece of paper he'd just retrieved. "A bit dry on details, so we'll have to gather more information from the locals once we arrive in Knat. My apologies for tearing you away from the feast, but we'd best move now if we're to reach shelter by nightfall."

He put a foot in the stirrups as Salah started to read the note, then hesitated, as though something else had just occurred to him, and stepped back down. "Ah, I'd forogotten," he admitted. "You've only just been knighted. Do you have a horse?"

Salah gladly shook Ser Gabriel's hand and quietly thanked him for his congratulations, taking the message and quickly looking it over. Unlike Ser Gabriel, he had been born into nobility and educated thusly, and he passed the missive back without a word scantly fifteen seconds later, its contents burned into his mind. "I do, Ser, but I'll need more than that before I leave. Allow me a few minutes to get everything," he requested, sprinting off to the barracks without waiting for permission, or even acknowledgement (such a thing was a waste of his time and Ser Gabriel's both, not to mention a delay of justice). Two such necessities, his senior's eyes noted, were his sword and shield - evidently, Salah had attended his knighting ceremony unarmed.

But a minute later, Salah had burst into his room and commenced preparations, hastily collecting not only his arms and helmet, but smithing supplies sufficient to repair both his and Ser Gabriel's armor were they to suffer moderate damage, a small journal (as well, of course, with both quill and ink), and enough imperial coinage to pay for several weeks of food and lodgings. Now armed and generally better-prepared for the assignment, he raced back to the stableyard and into the stables to saddle his own horse, a massive storm-grey stallion, and pack his saddlebags with what little he had taken. Shortly thereafter he rode out astride the beast, meeting his comrade-in-arms in the center of the stableyards. "I apologize for your wait, Ser Gabriel, but I thought it unwise to begin my first assignment unprepared," he noted, neither his words nor breathing betraying the haste with which he had provisioned his departure.

"Of course." Ser Gabriel waited atop his horse, now fully outfitted himself. "As was prudent. Ha, Zealot!" This last bit to his horse, in the elven fashion, followed with a click of the tongue and a nudge of the knees, which started the beast trotting towards the gate with hardly a shift of the reins at all. With his lance rested over his shoulder and his shield held high to display the Phoenix to all observers, he looked very much the picture of the knight in shining armor atop that snow-white stallion, (a thought that had not failed to occur to him when he'd paid so much extra for the color of its coat). He wondered why his new partner wasn't carrying a lance himself; did they not teach him to joust? Strange, but there'd be plenty of time to talk about it on the road. They had quite a long ride ahead of them, after all.

The sound of Camphor's signal whistle is followed by the low angry growl of multiple wolves. As Regas pushes through the underbrush into a small clearing where Camphor hangs from a tree limb by one arm while firing one of his crossbows into the pack of menacing beasts. One of the wolves whimpers as a bolt lodges in its shoulder.

"Stay back." Regas says firmly and quietly to Wilhelm before barreling into the pack of wolves. He swings Vera over his head and drives the hefty axe low, cleaving deeply into the meat and sinew of a wolf. Some of the pack snarl at him and slowly circle around the courageous dwarf.

Mordrin taps his feet impatiently as he looks over the inventory in his cart. "Et's about tahm. I need this haul delivered yesterday. Let's go!" He blows a whistle that signals the driver to move along.

"Valgen, we'll be moving through the Rolling Hills today. We'll make a single stop to water the horses and only that single stop on the way. The trip should be safe for the most part, except for that stop. Just as we're drawn to water, so are other beasts. Your job is to keep me'n mine safe at that stop. You'll git your pay when we reach Knat 'n I get paid. Got it? Let's go." The grey haired dwarf grabs a hold on a chain that ties down the canvas stretched over the wagon before pulling himself up onto the wagon. "Keep up, an no complainin' "

The pure maiden smiles warmly at the little gnome. "Oh dear, you're heading to the Haunted Wood?" She reaches into her bodice and pulls out a small vial. "There is a sickness in those woods. If you could bring back a bit of dew, or tree sap for me to analyze, I'd appreciate it greatly. My, uh, sisters here are concerned about the spread of that sickness. If you do this for us, I'll give you the treasure that lies at the bottom of this lake." She laughs enchantingly. "Do we have a deal?"

The crowd quickly made a path for the pair of Phoenix Knights to leave the Royal Quarter. After a few short hours, they find themselves on the road. The flatland of Arcadia spread out around them. Farm after farm after farm passed them by on their trip of vital importance. Slowly, Archades shrank and vanished behind them as the Amber Mountains began to peek out over the horizon before them.

As the pair of elven folk ride past a hops farm, something abnormal and uneasy lingers just beyond Ser Gabriel's senses. Something was definitely amiss.

The horses suddenly became agitated as the weather shifted to a heavy rain. The clouds slowly block out the sunlight and the scene changes drastically. The dry plains quickly pooled with water as the ground struggled to drink up the vast amounts of water offered to it by the skies. Lightning strikes as Salah's horse rears suddenly.

An arrow suddenly appears before Gabriel's eyes in the left flank of his steed. The fletching was crude and poorly made. Likely a goblin-made arrow, which meant it might also be poisoned.

For some reason Kappa felt that the woman was a tad suspicious. The problem was that he could not quite figure out why. Was it her appearance? She was beautiful, but one could not last long trusting appearances in these lands. Was it the way she talked? He could not shake the feeling that he was being manipulated. Was it the way that she offered him treasure for so small an errand? Kappa knew he was being paranoid, after all, this woman had not been antagonistic to him in the slightest. Yet, the doubt still lingered in his mind, he might have to be wary of her until his doubts went away. He gave the woman a bashful smile when he talked, he spoke clearly now, having calmed down. “Well, If you are concerned about the sickness I'm happy to help you with that. I could get some sap or dew for you, but um, I'm not sure when I would have the time to return here. I'm not interested in the treasure, but I don't need a reward.”

How great could it be anyways, stuck at the bottom of a lake. Probably decayed beyond use. If it was anything of value, who would put it be in the lake in the first place? Clearly they had not cared for the proper maintenance of their possessions.

Unless it's waterproof, but what are the chances of that? “By the way, I haven't heard of this sickness before. Since I'm going to the area, can you tell me a bit about it? Does it travel through the water?”

The maiden rested a hand on her thigh. "Up until a few years ago, the Sylvan Wood, also known as the Sylvestrian Wood, stretched across the River of Stars. Now the west side of the river is horribly cursed. Demons and death are the only things that come out of the ground. The wood rots, and plants are foul. Even the beasts within are turning feral and worse. I am unsure of the source or the ability of this curse to spread, but I hear of it through the ebb and flow of the waters. If you do go, be wary and tread lightly." She casts a glance toward the lake. "If you've no need for the treasure of the lake, then I will offer you a lock of my hair in return. A lock of hair from a water nymph is proof to all creatures of the sea that you are to be trusted. It is a rare and valuable gift. Would you accept it in its place? I cannot ask you to risk yourself for this task without promise of reward. It would be...improper and disrespectful of me." She smiles and her eyes glimmer.

Kappa a little felt bad for not being able to trust others. The woman had sounded very earnest just now. He tried not to think about it too much, it was just a part of his nature. The grass shook as he picked himself up and dusted his pack. “If you put it like that, it would be rude of me to refuse. I'll try to get it done as quick as I can. Oh, and thanks for the warning.” Kappa straightened his cap after saying his thanks, looking up at the woman. He knew that some gnomes didn't like having to look up at taller folk. Kappa didn't mind it, it was just the way things were.

(After Kappa takes the small vial, he will continue travelling if there is nothing left to say.)

Gabriel wasted no time as the arrow slipped just past the length of his shield to strike Zealot, but dropped his lance and vaulted from the saddle before the injured beast could collapse or throw him. "Salah! Ambush! On your left!" He shouted, landing hard on the horse's left side, immediately raising his shield to give both himself and his steed some cover from the next shot. "Horse is down!" Cursing, he lifted the visor of his helm to clear up his field of view, and looked intently around for the source of the attack.

Wilhelm takes a step back and hefts his woodcutting ax in case any of the wolves come his way. He sincerely hopes they do not, since it would probably be best to let the professionals handle this situation. He does worry a little bit as the pack surrounds Regas, knowing that wolves specialize in bringing down big game by harassing it from all sides. He spares a moment to glance at Camphor, but the half-elf seems to be safe enough up in his tree.

The young maiden smiles as Kappa accepts her offer. "Thank you, little one. Before you go, what is your name?" She extends a hand, palm down, toward Kappa. "My sisters call me Clarissa."

The winds blow warmly from the south. The smell of grass and wildflowers fills the air. In the distance, the roar of a terrible beast echoes across the wind. "Be safe, little one."

After a few hours of traveling alone through the wild lands of the Rolling Hills, Kappa finds himself crossing paths with a traveling merchant wagon packed full of dwarves.

"Hail, fellow! Mordrin's Sundry Goods. Anything a wanderer like yourself might need out here? We're about to break for camp. Still a few days travel to the Trade City. I'm sure a gnome like yourself has some tales to share, and we've got the ale to share 'em over." An older dwarf hails Kappa kindly. Ol' Mordrin always did carry a smile for any potential customer, even though he was grim and tenacious toward his own employees.

The cart slows as it approaches Kappa, and eventually pulls to a full stop. "We camp here, boys. Set the tents and check for tracks. We don't want any trolls wandering in after the scent of our food, now do we?"

Five dwarves pile off of the cart and set about pitching tents and unloading camping cargo. "Valgen, go with Argata and make sure no Wildlings are whereabouts." He announces sternly over the noise of the dwarves at work.
