So I recently finished working with
@Walrus illustrating his Robot Ninjas game and I figured you guys might be interested in the resulting images. I'll also write a little about the ideas behind each design.
First of all I want to give a shout out to Walrus for being pretty awesome to work with despite scheduling and timezone issues.
The robots weren’t specifically supposed to look like ninjas, but they all had a separate theme to adhere to.
The Original
The idea behind this one is that he was one of the first bots to participate in the Robot Ninjas competition and one of the longstanding champions. I wanted to make this guy look like he’s been around awhile and taken a beating during his time as a fighter. I liked the idea that originally the original was a construction robot therefore his design could be big and durable with exposed hydraulics and some damage.
The Veteran
I can’t remember if I got the official name for this one. I’m calling it the Veteran because the original inspiration for this one was ex-military. Early designs for him were very blocky and military looking. I ended up going with a more streamlined stealthy look because the earlier designs were too generic and boring.
Disco Fever
Disco’s backstory was that he was previously in the entertainment industry. I obviously took inspiration from the disco theme. His head probably went through more redesigns then all the rest of the robots combined until we settled on the plain disco ball. His moves are focused around evasion and laser light shows.
The Trickster
This one I don’t think had a backstory at the time or an official name either. I just got a list of moves, which was largely lightning based, and some criteria they wanted to see in the looks. I wanted the internals and wiring to look extra isolated because of the lightning based move set. I suppose she was probably custom built for Robot Ninjas.
And the Show Bot
This guy was last minute with the idea of a very showy form over function type robot. Because of the short notice I don’t think there was a backstory created for this guy either. More then likely he started out in the entertainment industry as well. I took inspiration from body builders and boxers for this one. I wanted him to look sleek and expensive. I tried to make it look like the exterior plating could shift and move mimicking the flexing of muscles. Not very practical for a robot, but would look really cool. He was also the quickest to complete from start to finish.
I probably got some of the information wrong, because Walrus and his team were updating and changing things as I was designing these, but those were were the ideas in my head as I was working on these. Add in The Megas for background noise and this is what you get.
