While I don't agree with everything that Dunsparce is saying, he's basically saying what I think. Too many doctors slap you with a prescription and send you on your merry way instead of actually helping you as well as they can. Ultimately, the power to help yourself is going to come from you, the doctors are there to help facilitate that power and that healing. You, Regis, and your body are a lot stronger than the medical community gives you credit for, so use them as a resource to better yourself.

Just avoid the psychiatrists, the ones who prescribe medicine. At best, most of their success can be attributed to the placebo effect, at worse they end up causing more harm than good. There's next to no scientific basis for anything in psychology, so taking meds is very dangerous. Just look for a therapist, someone you can talk to and help work out your problems.
Psychologists and psychiatrists are not the same thing, you dumb fucking monkey. Only psychiatrists can prescribe medicine, but that's because they have medical degrees and specialize in the diagnosis of mental disorders - many of which indicate their presence via changes in brain or blood chemistry. Stop trying to give people advice when you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

This is why I think psychiatry is a scam, by the way.

That's probably why I specifically said psychiatrists you insultingly insulting insult.

And then, as demonstrated in bold, you showed that you don't understand what they do by explicitly linking them to psychology and the lack of scientific basis therein.

Not trusting something because of a video made specifically to list or reveal shitty things about it is stupid as hell.

Are you trying to say that Psychiatry is based on Neurology, rather than Psychology?

This is a stupid argument. The real argument should be, Xander, psychology and psychiatry are sciences you fuckwit. Psychiatry has a lot of bad stories, because as a new medical field it is still working out the kinks. There have been aspects of psychiatry that are like amputations during the American civil war, but psychiatry as a whole is not bad. A lot of the bad results from psychiatry are caused by our society's obsession with that new super bad health issue and our hypochondriac nature. Take for example, gluten allergies that were almost completely non-existent until two or three years ago. When you start mixing this behavior with psychoactive drugs, like with our generation's ADHD hysteria, you get bad results. Especially when many of the people subjected to it are children who don't know anything other than what their teachers, parents, and friends tell them. That said, there are issues that can only be fixed with psychiatry. The most obvious example is depression, which has been shown by research to stem not from environmental emotional strain but from imbalances in brain chemistry. You cannot make an actually depressed person feel lastingly better by talking it out with them, they need medicine to fix their brain chemistry. Also note, no one is going to make a documentary of all the times psychiatry has worked. No, that's not interesting. That's not controversial. No one cares if the status quo matches our perceptions of the status quo. Instead, they're going to make documentaries on all the times psychiatry has fucked up. That's interesting. That's controversial. That's the status quo not matching our perceptions of the status quo.

Psychology meanwhile has been a science much longer than psychiatry and has even more research and data behind it. Because psychology has underlying principles we still have not figured out how to determine or test, there are still significant differences between psychologists. That's why you'll find that psychotherapists often have very different approaches to patients. This also stems from there being multiple approaches to every problem in every field. This is the only way I can imagine you denying that psychology is a science, but other scientists disagree too, all the time. Theoretical physicists don't agree on string theory or various aspects of quantum mechanics, mathematicians can't agree on the value of 0^0, engineers (not scientists, but close enough) don't agree on the feasibility of a hyperloop.

This is the Journal of Applied Psychology. In it you will find scientific studies conducted by scientists known as psychologists. Science.
This is the American Journal of Psychiatry. In it you will find scientific studies conducted by scientists known as psychiatrists. Science.

Also, congratulations Xander, this is the most I've ever typed for something serious in this community.
